A firefight between the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and ADF rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has left two Ugandan soldiers dead.
The UPDF confirmed the deaths, which occurred on Wednesday in Ituri province, while dismissing social media claims of mass casualties as “misinformation.”
According to Maj. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, a UPDF spokesperson, the firefight took place in Apakwang, where two ADF fighters were also killed.
The joint UPDF-FARDC forces are now pursuing a splinter group of 15 to 20 rebels.
The UPDF maintains that despite sporadic attacks, the joint military operation, Operation Shujaa, has been successful in dismantling major ADF strongholds and enabling civilians to return home.
