Kampala’s political scene just got a fresh dose of drama, and it’s got everything — heartbreak, politics, and a bit of scandal.
Winifred Nakandi, who insiders whisper once had a close relationship with NUP boss Robert Kyagulanyi (yes, that close), has announced she’s running for Nakawa East MP as an independent.
Nakandi had earlier flirted with the idea of contesting for Kampala Woman MP under the National Unity Platform, but things went south fast.
She pulled out, blaming what she called “irregularities” in how the party handed out its cards.
But word in the corridors is that she expected something more — a nod of support from Kyagulanyi himself. When that didn’t happen, she decided to go it alone.
“She felt betrayed,” a source close to her camp told us. “She thought her history with the party’s top man would count for something. It didn’t.”
Now, she’s hitting the campaign trail with a fiery message about being “a voice for the common person,” promising unity and inclusive development.
Nakandi will be squaring off with NUP’s own Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro and NRM’s veteran Fredrick Ruhindi, among others, in what’s already shaping up to be a political soap opera worth watching.
The Electoral Commission will confirm nominations later this month, but Kampala’s already talking — not about manifestos, but about the messy love-meets-politics saga that might just define this race.
