Police Hunt Assailants in Bishop Niringiye Attack
Police in Kampala Metropolitan have launched a manhunt for unknown assailants who attacked Bishop Zac Niringiye on Monday, July 29, 2024. The attack occurred on Commercial Road near Rock View Hotel in Ntinda, a suburb of Kampala, while Niringiye was jogging at midday.
A viral video on social media shows the retired bishop lying unconscious by the roadside, being assisted by Good Samaritans. According to police reports, Niringiye was struck with a blunt object, causing him to lose consciousness. During the attack, his iPhone 13 Pro Max was stolen.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire confirmed the incident and provided details on the ongoing investigation. “The Police at Ntinda are currently investigating a robbery incident that took place on July 29, 2024,” Owoyesigire stated. “Efforts to apprehend the suspects are ongoing, and we are working diligently to bring those responsible to justice.”
Niringiye received first aid from a nearby clinic and is now out of danger. This incident mirrors a similar attack in 2021, where he sustained injuries from thugs who struck him with a brick and stole his mobile phone.
Bishop Zac Niringiye gained prominence after retiring from the Anglican Church, where he served as Assistant Bishop of Kampala. He became an activist following the 2011 elections, notably spearheading the Black Monday movement in 2012, which aimed to expose corruption scandals through a weekly magazine.
