A High Court in Masaka has denied bail for Eddie Mutwe and Achileo Kivumbi, two bodyguards of National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi.
The court’s decision, delivered by Chief Magistrate Simon Ntoroko on behalf of Judge Fatuma Nanziri, cited concerns that their release could endanger the public and witnesses.
The court stated that the two men, who appeared by video link from Luzira Prison, face serious charges and their sureties were deemed unsatisfactory.
The judge’s written ruling indicated a “credible threat” that they could interfere with witnesses or destabilize their communities if released.
Defence lawyer Sam Muyizzi expressed disappointment that state prosecutors did not attend the hearing, and NUP supporters protested outside the court following the decision.
The accused, led by Mugumya Gadaph, urged their supporters to remain firm. The judge has directed that the trial should begin without delay.
